The Colombian forest sector

The Colombian forestry sector presents several comparative attributes and environmental advantages, which place it as an important pole of growth. The country has 10% of biodiversity of the world in less than 0.8 % of planet surface, this figure place the country as the second one with more biodiversity of the world. This potential is reflected in 114 millions of hectares of continental extension, of them, 64 millions are covered by natural forests, distributed in the region of the Colombian Amazon, in the Pacific Coast, Magdalena and Catatumbo basin.

Under this frame is necessary to stimulate the management and sustainable harvest of the forest with aims of conservation and incorporation of forestry sector in the regional and national economy. The ongoing project: “Strengthening to Integral Regional Sustainable Program- PRIS-“, supported by the national government and The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is promoting the forestry management in Tumaco, (South East Colombian coast), and Choco (North east Colombian coast), through an accurate technology transfer that will improve the forestry harvest process, decreasing waste and obtaining better quality products.

In addition, this project gives the opportunity to familes working in the wood industry (very low income Columbian families) to switch from coca to wood production. This process is essential, because any activities related to coca within families destroys them (values, family equilibrium) ; we have already observed an improvement in families participating in this project.

According to Forestry Management Plan in Tumaco, 12 species were selected with ecological and commercial potential. The woods of this species are described in the present catalogue.
